Retired Army Sergeant (First Class) Melvin Morris received the distinguished 'Medal of Honor' -- the highest military honor -- for his heroics during the Vietnam War. In September 1969, Morris led an advance across enemy lines near Chi Lang, Vietnam, to retrieve a fallen comrade and keep sensitive documents from falling into enemy hands. He single-handedly destroyed an enemy force that had pinned his battalion from a series of bunkers. He was shot three times, including once in the chest, but did not stop until he reached relative safety with the American casualty. Decades would pass from his action in Vietnam until he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama in 2014, the only living African American hero of the men known as the 'Valor 24', who received the military's highest honor following a lengthy review of their actions in previous wars.
